Severe Acute Malnutrition

According to the World Bank, malnutrition remains the single greatest cause of child mortality. Over one-third of all child deaths are due to malnutrition. Children who are malnourished between six months to five years old have a higher risk of falling sick, and face impaired cognitive development, which adversely affects the country’s productivity and growth. Malnourished children are more likely to be below average height when they reach adulthood, to have lower educational achievement, and to give birth to smaller infants than those who are nourished adequately. Maternal and child malnutrition are also associated with lower economic status in adulthood, with effects that spill over to future generations.

However, the Lancet reported that the latest thinking to combat malnutrition is to move into community therapeutic feeding, which can cover larger populations than hospital-based programs, does not tie up sometimes sparse hospital resources, and involves local communities directly. iv PB+J intends to go along with this concept by manufacturing ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) in communities where it is needed most.

What is RUTF?

The ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) is formulated specifically for the dietary treatment of severe acute malnutrition before the onset of medical complications, which allows rapid growth and recovery of children. The most common type of RUTF is a lipid- based formula made of peanuts, milk powder, oil, sugar and a micronutrient powder. The peanuts contain mono-unsaturated fats, are easily digestible, and are high in zinc and protein, which greatly helps the immune system. A great benefit to this type of RUTF is that it can be stored without refrigeration for months without spoiling and requires no cooking.

Our Model

We have created a non-profit organization designed specifically to eradicate Severe Acute Malnutrition in underdeveloped nations. PB+J Foods helps locals in these areas to build self-sustaining economies through the local manufacturing of a fortified peanut butter paste, which support local medical facilities and health care education programs, and by providing assistance in the development and commercialization of local farmer co-ops.

Good nutrition is important for healthy growth and development of children. Our model allows access to quality health care and provides immediate nutrition to children suffering from severe acute malnutrition.

Economic Growth

PB+J Foods, Inc. will help create economic growth in the community by the partnering to facilitate Co-op Farmer Programs.

Once produced, the RUTF will be sold on the open market to other humanitarian agencies. Profits from selling the RUTF to these agencies will allow the hospitals to provide the RUTF to their patients at the hospital and outreach clinics at no charge.
